  • HPI Daily Analysis: Any 'shame' belongs at the Indiana Statehouse
"SB101 was a poorly written piece of legislation, and poorly explained. Beyond the social conservative wing of the Republican Party, there was virtually no consensus developed around the concept in the broader population, which tends to be inclusive. This is what happens when you have super majority legislatures. The majority caucuses become encapsulated in their own rhetoric. Second, Gov. Pence called media coverage “shameful.” I take exception, Governor. The news media did not propose this law, write this law, or pass it. We did not go out and seek business leaders like Bill Oesterle to oppose this bill. The news media did not prompt NCAA President Mark Emmert to express reservations and open the notion that the organization might leave Indiana due to the needs of its workforce. These were legitimate business reactions to poorly crafted and executed legislation. And it comes in a state that for a generation has prioritized life science, advanced manufacturing and high tech industries where success is forged by multi-cultural workforces.  Now we find our Governor and legislative leaders scrambling to come up with “clarifying” legislation. These same public servants have long told us about the various tax cuts and the concepts like Right to Work were imperative to create a better business environment in this state. It’s ironic that now that business and corporate interests have reacted the way they have, it’s now become a “shameful” display of media craft. Finally, the business community is beginning to sort this out. More and more businesses will conspicuously display a long time conservative notion, that they will accept commerce from anyone willing to pay. For 20 years, Howey Politics Indiana has served all Hoosiers and we will proudly do business with them all. In these quarters, there is no shame. Today, shame is reserved for the Indiana Statehouse, which has deeply wronged many of its citizens." - Howey Politics Indiana Publisher Brian A. Howey
