INDIANAPOLIS - Senate President Pro Tempore David Long (R-Fort Wayne) today announced several key appointments within the Senate Majority Caucus. Sen. Brandt Hershman (R-Buck Creek) will replace former Sen. Connie Lawson, who left in March to become Indiana’s Secretary of State, as Senate Majority Floor Leader. Sen. Ryan Mishler (R-Bremen) will replace Hershman as Senate Majority Whip. Sen. Randy Head (R-Logansport) will replace Secretary Lawson as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Government. All appointments are effective today.
The Majority Floor Leader is the top leadership post appointed by the Senate President Pro Tem. The Majority Leader serves as a senior advisor to the Pro Tem and in a variety of roles including administrative management, oversight of the Senate floor and development of legislative priorities. Hershman will also continue in his role as Chair of the Senate Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy.
Hershman graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Political Science, and is currently pursuing a juris doctorate from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis. His legislative achievements include authoring Indiana's landmark telecommunications deregulation act, co-authoring the Major Moves transportation bill, and most recently co-authoring the elimination of Indiana's inheritance tax. He was also recently honored as the 2012 NFIB Guardian of Small Business.
“Brandt has repeatedly proven to be a strong leader, both as the Chair of the Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee as well as in the position of Majority Whip,” Long said. “He brings valuable experience and perspective to the role of Majority Floor Leader, and I am confident that he will do an excellent job for us.”
Mishler joined the Indiana Senate in 2004 and has formerly served as Assistant Majority Whip and currently serves as Chairman of the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. He has been President of Mishler Funeral Homes since 1999 and is also President of the Bremen Monument Company. “The Senate Majority Whip has become a key position on our leadership team,” Long said. “The Whip must work on a daily basis on a variety of matters within the caucus, not the least of which is taking head counts at critical times. Ryan has the skill set to handle the job and the complete respect of his fellow caucus members. I am confident that he is best person for the job.”
Head has served in the Senate since 2008 and received his B.A. from Wabash College and his Juris Doctorate from Indiana University. He currently has his own private law practice in Logansport and formerly served as deputy prosecutor for Cass County. Head is Chairman of the Courts and Juvenile Justice Subcommittee, is a board member of the Cass County Community Foundation and a member of the Indiana Fraternal Order of Police and the Indiana Farm Bureau. Head replaces former Sen. Connie Lawson, now Secretary of State, as Chairman of the Committee on Local Government.
“Connie Lawson did an outstanding job as chair of the Senate Local Government Committee, so the bar is set very high. However, I believe Randy Head is up to the task, with his strong background in county government and as a prosecuting attorney,” Long said. “You have to be tough, yet broad-minded to lead this committee. Sen. Head personifies both of these characteristics. He’ll do an excellent job.”
