  • American leadership and the ISIS fantasy
"It is disturbing to watch the Obama administration stumble over strategies, definitions and options on the coming war against ISIS. The idea that we can do this without American boots on the ground (particularly special forces) is a fantasy. The idea of arming “moderate” Syrian rebels that we barely know into an effective force on the ground is a fairy tale. We spent more than a decade arming and training armies in Iraq and South Vietnam only to watch them drop their arms and run at defining moments. I hate to say this, but if ISIS is to be eradicated, it is going to take what Gen. Colin Powell once described as the use of “overwhelming” force. The problem is that after more than a decade of war, Americans are tired of war. This is going to be a long slog, and few of us are willing to acknowledge this reality." - HPI Publisher Brian A. Howey
